The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Comes After Poor Reception

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a more defined direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news follows a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our fans.

The trust in this project grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the new Studio Head of the team. Following some time of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting him soon. We are all eager to persist seeing the evolution of the game in the months to come.

David

Experience of the New Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description reads. "Take on the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."

The game lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can expect additional details as production progresses.
