Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
