British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
