Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the attack made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
